A law graduate uncovers a government conspiracy and must navigate the consequences of exposing the truth.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: Robert Singer Jr., a law graduate joins a UN-backed law firm. His mentor is a veteran lawyer Alfred Hayes. Hayes is a popular attorney known for exposing corrupt activities of politicians. One day, with Singer by his side, Hayes receives a suspicious package.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: The package has no address and is delivered by one of the men Hayes talks to every Friday in hushed whispers. Hayes decides to open the package in front of Singer. It contains classified files labeled as redacted. It looks like standard CIA files.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: That cold night in 1974, they learn that the United States shortly after defeating the Nazis, recruited war criminal scientists in an Operation called Operation Paperclip. Since both men have fathers who served during WWII, they feel a grave uneasiness after learning the truth.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: The two men, mentor and mentee argue over what they should do next. Singer, young and idealistic wants to expose their government's grave sin. Hayes, understanding that doing so would antagonize with the military-intelligence complex, refuses firmly.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: Hayes, terrified of reprisals to his persona and family, makes a call to his Langley contact that provided the documents. In the meanwhile, young and naive Robert, aware that Hayes is in the other room, made several copies and kept them hidden.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: Hayes burns the documents thinking the problem has ended once and for all. Robert tried to mask his real intentions. Suddenly, Robert leaves the office.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: Hayes furiously hands Singer a newspaper with the headline "Anonymous source bearing the name Walter Gates reveals the United States brought home Nazi scientists after fighting Nazism abroad". On the other side of the newspaper, the government calls it a hoax.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: Singer walks down the street to see almost all varieties of newspapers call the Walter Gates leak (using Walter Gates as pseudonym) a hoax and a communist ploy by the Soviets.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: Months later, an elderly, sickly woman and her husband meet Singer. Sad and frail, the couple tell me about a program that was revealed three years ago, by the Church Committee. It was called MKUltra.
Akinnawonu Gabriel: A long queue of people line up to meet Singer and Hayes. They all look scarred as they describe the torture and maltreatment they received during MKUltra. Singer generously decides to represent them. He is taking on the United States government.
